Cake and Ice Cream for Dinner

In all fairness to the registered dietitian I lambasted in my first post, reducing your caloric intake can make you lose weight due to STARVATION!! Once you start reducing calories your cravings start to take over. Take a look at the plate of food in my first post. That’s what I cooked for me: nutrient dense whole foods. Since August, 2006, I’ve managed my weight through good nutrition, not some stupid weight-loss diet. There is no pill that any doctor can give you that works better than exercise and whole foods, even modest amounts of it, to keep your weight under control. Of course you have to be conscientious of what you are eating but if you are expending more energy then you are taking in you can eat cake and ice cream 24/7. Now don’t try this at home kiddies, it’s not that simple but simple nonetheless.

  1. So what would you say to a client who eats a nutrient dense diet but still is not losing weight?

  2. Yay thank you for your interest. Aahh yes, the ‘ol still not losing weight question. Well, there are so many variables to why weight may not be coming off. Is the individual exercising, maybe there is an underlying disease or dysfunction, socio-economics, genetics etc. It could be something still in the diet like artificial sweeteners, Starbuck’s mocha lattes, snacking etc. Or, what about cooking with too much oil or fat, TOO MUCH nutrient dense food, infrequent meals or too many small ones, the meal may not be balanced. Maybe there is an imbalance in the flora, excessive candida, STRESS, I can go on.
Cutting calories as a form of weight-loss/management has been shown to be short lived. Once the dieter goes “off the diet” the weight only returns and it brings friends. However, there is something to be said about portion control. Something that can be tried is a three day fast. Of course, talking with a doctor before any fast is HIGHLY recommended and a naturopathic doctor who specializes in weight management can bring insight into why the weight won’t come off. Lastly, maybe the weight is fine but dissatisfaction with body image is the real problem.

  3. I like that you emphasize exercise in your plan; caloric restriction has never been my cup of tea either, but if you can find a nice balance of both I think it makes for a healthier lifestyle overall.

  4. Yes Shantell, BALANCE is key and it seems to me that most Americans can achieve this but it takes work and change. Work and change is what most Americans are afraid of so they let their health suffer for it. Now that we have President Obama, I hope to reach those who are not afraid of work and change and are now ready to take charge of their health. Balance is a key control spot that I will be writing about in great detail over time. Thank you for your comment.
